Recuerdes De Aquí

This series is homage to all memories we create with friends, lovers, enemies, rivals, neighbors within building and structures that mostly will outdo us.

These drawings stay in their context, as a site specific  gift, anecdote, or accent to space they were inspired by. And yeah like anything tied to reality it is tarnished with politics, injustice, melancholy, tears and laughter.

Recuerdes de Aqui  ( Records of Here) #3 | Medium: Fresco on the wall | 07.11.22 |  La Escuela De Muralismo De Oaxaca Oaxaca City

I got to know about Jesus and his mural school in Oaxaca, after one year of searching every corner of Mexico city for someone to teach me legit muralism/ fresco in continuation of what I had started to learn in one day fresco workshop in skowhegan. Now I am one step closer to not feeling fomo when I see works of Rivera, Michelangelo and other heros of teenage years in museums.

Fresco is art of patience where u break the wall to its core, sift and wash sand, make cal, restore the wall day by day, layer by layer, making rinzaffo, arriccio, intonaco, till the end that u paint within that small window of time that wall is going back to becoming to becoming stone again.

I was given entrance of the escuela. As part of the recuerdas de aqui series, I wanted it to be about the school itself. I got the idea of what to draw when I saw Mariana and Ana making plaster in front of the altar in the backyard. In Mexico many houses have altars to keep the memories of their loved ones alive.

When I was halfway in the fresco, Paolina told me that there was a block that they used to put at the entrance of school with the name of school on it. But it got stolen and they never got the chance to make it again. They had a picture of the block though. That's the story of the frame block with the name of school on it. I tried to draw it similar to the stolen block as much as my non skillful hands allowed:)

and now knowing fresco, i can finally make my idea of fresco panel street intervention a reality and what better city than Mexico city for that! Stay tuned:)
